The construction of diesel-electric locomotives of the 2041 series began in 1960 in cooperation between the 'Đuro Đaković' factory and the French factory 'Brissonneau et Lotz'.
Diesel-electric 2041-100 series locomotive was created by the modernization of the 40 years old 2041-000 series locomotives. From the original locomotive, only the main frame and the bogies were retained, while all other parts and systems are completely new or have been significantly modified. The Locomotives were equipped with a new CAT3805B diesel engine (certified according to UIC623).
